"Dusk on Lauriergracht" — Grant Conboy 2023
Some buildings just have it.
This quaint canal house on Lauriergracht has no particular claim to fame — no blue plaque, no famous resident, no notable history that Grant knows of. But it has seen some life, that much is certain. And on an autumn evening in 2023, walking home from his studio on the Prinsengracht, it stopped him in his tracks.
The leaves are turning and lifting in the evening breeze. The street lamp has just come on. Every window glows amber against the deepening blue of dusk, smoke curling lazily from the chimney above. A bike leans against the railing below, patient and unhurried. Whoever lives here is already home.
This is gezellig — not explained, not performed, just felt. The warmth of a lit window on a cold evening. The particular comfort of a city that knows how to be cosy.
Grant has walked past this building every night since. It still gets him every time.
