There's a peculiar Dutch tradition that visitors to Amsterdam notice almost immediately — the curtains are open. Always. It dates back to the Calvinist notion that honest people have nothing to hide, that an unobscured window was a statement of moral character. Somewhere along the way, the curtains stayed open but the motivation quietly shifted. Now it's about the Delftware collection. The gallery wall. The model sailing ship. The chandelier.
Number 17 is putting on a very good show.
Outside/In captures that most beloved of Amsterdam pastimes — the slow evening walk, the warm glow of a stranger's interior, the irresistible peek into another life. A wall hung with gilt-framed paintings, a blue and white ceramic centerpiece, rooms receding warmly into the distance. Curated, considered, and absolutely meant to be seen.
We're all just doing exactly what they hoped we would.
