The Dutch Mountain

"The Dutch Mountain" — Grant Conboy 2023

The Netherlands is famously flat. They make up for it in bikes.

Every city has its landmarks. Amsterdam has the Munttoren, the canals, the canal houses — and the Dutch Mountain. That magnificent, chaotic, ever-growing pile of bicycles that appears on every street corner, outside every station, along every railing. Hundreds of them, leaning into each other at impossible angles, handlebar over wheel over frame, somehow standing, somehow functional.

Grant spotted this particular peak near the Muntplein and couldn't walk past. The Munttoren rises patiently in the background, the tram wires slice across the pale sky above, and in the foreground — glorious, unapologetic disorder. A city that runs on two wheels, and parks them wherever it pleases.

There's something quietly magnificent about it.
